IBM addresses 75% AI ROI failure rate with new agent-building platform and data management tools for CIOs facing multi-cloud complexity

IBM has unveiled a suite of hybrid technologies designed to address integration barriers that have hindered enterprise AI adoption. The announcement, made at the company’s annual Think event, introduces expanded capabilities that enable businesses to build and deploy AI agents using their own enterprise data.

According to IBM, enterprise applications are expected to grow significantly, with projections indicating over one billion apps emerging by 2028. This expansion creates pressure on organisations to scale operations across increasingly disconnected technology environments, requiring seamless integration, orchestration and data preparation.

A recent IBM CEO study reveals that business leaders anticipate the growth rate of AI investments to more than double over the next two years. Despite this enthusiasm, only 25% of AI initiatives have achieved expected returns on investment, as rapid adoption has resulted in fragmented technology implementations.

IBM Watsonx Orchestrate provides access to over 150 agent tools

The company is introducing a comprehensive package of enterprise-ready agent capabilities within its Watsonx Orchestrate platform. These tools allow companies to build custom agents in under five minutes, with integration options ranging from no-code to professional coding environments to accommodate various user requirements.

The package includes pre-built domain agents for specific business functions such as human resources, sales and procurement, alongside utility agents for basic tasks including web research and calculations. The system integrates with over 80 enterprise applications from vendors including Adobe, AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow and Workday.

IBM says it is launching a new Agent Catalog within Watsonx Orchestrate to provide access to more than 150 agents and pre-built tools from both IBM and partner organisations including Box, MasterCard, Oracle, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Symplistic.ai and 11x.

“The era of AI experimentation is over. Today’s competitive advantage comes from purpose-built AI integration that drives measurable business outcomes,” says Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO of IBM.

WebMethods Hybrid Integration shows significant return on investment for enterprise customers

To address integration challenges, IBM is introducing webMethods Hybrid Integration, a solution that replaces traditional workflows with agent-driven automation. This technology helps users manage integration complexity across applications, APIs, B2B partners, events, gateways and file transfers in hybrid cloud environments.

An independent Forrester Consulting Total Economic Impact study found that organisations adopting multiple webMethods integration capabilities realised a 176% return on investment over three years. The study also documented a 40% reduction in downtime, 33% time savings on complex projects and 67% time savings on simple projects.

These integration capabilities complement IBM’s automation portfolio, which encompasses application development, infrastructure automation and technology business management. The company has expanded integrations with HashiCorp, including Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and Vault for secrets management, to enhance automation across hybrid environments.

Watsonx.data evolution targets unstructured data to improve AI results

IBM is expanding watsonx.data to help organisations utilise unstructured data stored in contracts, spreadsheets and presentations. The updated platform combines an open data lakehouse with data fabric capabilities, including data lineage tracking and governance, to unify data across diverse formats and cloud environments.

Key facts
  • 176% ROI over three years for organisations adopting webMethods integration capabilities
  • 40% more accurate AI when connecting applications with unstructured data through watsonx.data
  • 450 billion AI inference operations per day processing capacity with new IBM LinuxONE 5 platform

According to company tests, connecting AI applications and agents with unstructured data through watsonx.data can lead to 40% more accurate AI compared to conventional retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) approaches.

The company is also introducing watsonx.data integration – a single-interface tool for orchestrating data across formats and pipelines – and watsonx.data intelligence, which applies AI technology to extract insights from unstructured data. These will be available as standalone products, with selected capabilities accessible through watsonx.data.

In a related development, IBM recently announced its intention to acquire DataStax, which specialises in unstructured data management for generative AI. The acquisition would provide clients with additional vector search capabilities. The company has also integrated watsonx as an API provider within Meta’s Llama Stack to enhance enterprise deployment of generative AI.

IBM’s technology portfolio expansion includes the launch of LinuxONE 5, described as its most secure Linux platform for data, applications and AI, with processing capacity of up to 450 billion AI inference operations daily. The platform features IBM’s Telum II on-chip AI processor and the IBM Spyre Accelerator, scheduled for availability in the fourth quarter of 2025.

“IBM is equipping enterprises with hybrid technologies that cut through complexity and accelerate production-ready AI implementations,” says Arvind Krishna.
