AMD has taken a strategic focus to AI, driven by its comprehensive solutions portfolio, open ecosystem approach and user-centric innovations

Since it was founded in 1969, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has consistently pushed the boundaries of computing technology, and today, it stands at the forefront of the AI revolution.

Having recently celebrated its 55th birthday, today AMD is looking ahead at the opportunities the new AI era presents, believing that AI’s full potential will be realised when the technology is pervasive, spanning from cloud data centres to edge devices and endpoints. AMD has recently announced an expansion of its mobile and desktop AI PC portfolio to better deliver business AI productivity and connectivity experiences, with its AI chips helping its shares soar in recent months.

This expansion has been spearheaded by Chair and CEO Dr Lisa Su, who has led the company’s transformation into a high-performance and adaptive computing leader and one of the fastest-growing semiconductor companies in the world.

As Dr Su said, announcing record data centre segment revenue of US$2.8bn – up 115% year-over-year – AMD’s AI business continues to accelerate. “We are well positioned to deliver strong revenue growth in the second half of the year led by demand for Instinct, EPYC and Ryzen processors.

“The rapid advances in generative AI are driving demand for more compute in every market,” she says, “creating significant growth opportunities as we deliver leadership AI solutions across our business.”

AMD: An extensive AI solutions portfolio

At the heart of AMD's AI offerings is a diverse range of high-performance and adaptive hardware and software solutions. The company’s product lineup includes:

Data Centre and Cloud Solutions: AMD’s EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators are powering some of the world's fastest supercomputers, including the exascale-class Frontier at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These solutions are particularly well-suited for training and running large language models (LLMs) and other compute-intensive AI workloads.

AI PCs: Recognising the growing importance of AI in personal computing, AMD has introduced AI capabilities to its Ryzen processors. These AI-enabled chips support applications that enhance business productivity, creativity, and security on laptops, desktops, and mobile workstations.

Adaptive and Embedded Computing: AMD’s solutions in this space enable real-time AI inferencing across various industries, including industrial, healthcare, automotive and aerospace sectors.

Gaming: The company is also bringing AI-powered experiences to gaming platforms, enhancing immersion on PCs, consoles and mobile devices.

Powering an open ecosystem

AMD recently announced the acquisition of the largest private AI lab in Europe, Silo AI, in a deal worth roughly US$665m. This deal, expected to close in the second half of 2024, represents a significant moment for AMD as it seeks to develop end-to-end solutions based on open standards.

AMD’s third pillar focuses on simplifying complex AI workloads into user-friendly experiences. The company aims to right-size AI solutions to fit the capabilities of different devices, ensuring optimal performance without compromising on efficiency or user experience.

This approach is particularly evident in AMD's AI PC initiative, where on-device AI processing enables features like real-time language translation, advanced video conferencing capabilities, and enhanced security measures, all while maintaining privacy by processing data locally.

AI Architectures

Underpinning AMD's AI solutions are several architectures:

CDNA: Designed for accelerating compute-intensive AI and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, the CDNA architecture enables efficient data sharing in tightly connected GPU systems.

XDNA: This spatial dataflow NPU architecture consists of a tiled array of AI Engines, offering high compute density for deep neural network (DNN) and signal processing workloads.

Zen: The foundation of AMD's Ryzen and EPYC processors, the Zen architecture delivers exceptional performance, scalability and efficiency across a wide range of computing applications.

RDNA: Primarily focused on gaming applications, the RDNA architecture incorporates AI accelerators to enhance performance and efficiency across various platforms.
