Inside Google Cloud's Renewed Collaboration With Servier

In a move poised to reshape drug development, pharmaceutical group Servier has extended its partnership with Google Cloud to harness advanced AI technologies.
Announced in January, 2025, the renewed collaboration builds on an initial five-year agreement established in 2022 which will now extend to a decade.
The aim? To transform every stage of Servier's operations, from research and development to production and supply chain logistics, using AI every step of the way.
A new era for drug discovery
So, what will this extended partnership promise? In short: speed.
In the pharmaceutical industry , the average development cycle for a new drug is around 15 years in length. Servier aims to accelerate this process by reducing attrition rates and enhancing its capacity to identify viable drug candidates more efficiently.
According to Claude Bertrand, Executive Vice President of R&D and Chief Scientific Officer at Servier, the integration of AI will “enable us to bring innovative treatments to patients more quickly and more personalised solutions.”
Central to this ambition is AI's ability to process vast amounts of data rapidly. By identifying therapeutic targets and patient subpopulations likely to respond positively to treatments, Servier hopes to streamline clinical trials and optimise drug formulations.
The company has already identified approximately 60 Gen AI use cases across its operations. These include early-stage research to identify new therapeutic targets, optimising precision medicine approaches, digitalising clinical trial recruitment and even automating regulatory compliance tasks.
Technological precision
Servier's reliance on AI underpins its broader shift toward precision medicine, particularly in addressing rare diseases and hard-to-treat cancers.
“By deploying Google Cloud AI solutions across our entire value chain, we are confirming our commitment to innovation for therapeutic progress, with a single objective: to accelerate and improve research for the benefit of patients,” says Virginie Dominguez, Executive Vice President of Digital Data and Information Systems at Servier.
This expansion complements Servier's strategic focus. Over 70% of the company's R&D budget is allocated to oncology, with neuroscience and immuno-inflammatory diseases identified as future growth drivers.
AI tools, including Google Cloud's Gemini large language models, are expected to enhance decision-making, streamline operations and personalise therapeutic offerings.
Beyond the lab: production and sustainability
AI's potential extends beyond R&D. Servier plans to incorporate predictive maintenance for its production facilities and supply chain optimisation, aiming to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high levels of efficiency.
Google Cloud's role in ensuring the security and confidentiality of Servier's data is integral to these initiatives. Shweta Maniar, Global Director of Healthcare & Life Sciences at Google Cloud, emphasises the ethical framework guiding the partnership.
“Servier is moving quickly from experimentation to production, in a pragmatic way, with a clear priority given to ethics, confidentiality and security,” she says.
The wider digital transformation
This collaboration underscores Servier's commitment to digital transformation, an approach bolstered by tools designed to empower its workforce.
From researchers to supply chain managers, employees across the organisation are equipped with cutting-edge AI capabilities, enabling real-time data analysis and informed decision-making.
While AI adoption in the pharmaceutical industry is not new, the scale and scope of Servier's partnership with Google Cloud mark a significant milestone. As the company embeds AI technologies into its operations, it aims to position itself as a leader in integrating scientific innovation with digital tools.
“This collaboration will lead to new progress in the research and treatment of many diseases in the years to come—we can't wait to see what will come next,” Shweta says.
