Microsoft and Anduril join to advance the US Army's IVAS, leveraging AR, AI and cloud computing for battlefield awareness and decision-making for soldiers

As warfare across the world grows more complex, the need for intuitive, information-rich tools becomes increasingly urgent.

Traditional mission command systems that rely on flat maps, static dashboards and verbal communication are now ill-suited to the dynamic nature of modern battlefields.

In response to these urgent challenges, Microsoft and Anduril, a defence technology firm, have announced an expanded partnership to advance the US Army's Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) programme, aiming to enhance combat effectiveness and situational awareness for soldiers through advanced augmented reality (AR) technology.

Enhancing combat effectiveness and decision-making

This new agreement builds upon previous collaboration between Microsoft and Anduril, which saw the integration of Anduril's Lattice platform into IVAS that provides rapid AI-enabled situational awareness capabilities to enhance soldier safety and operational effectiveness.

Now, the companies have developed the IVAS programme that is designed to increase combat effectiveness, awareness and decision-making on the battlefield.

“By empowering soldiers with the tools they need to make faster, smarter decisions, we're building a future where technology and human ingenuity combine to ensure mission success."

By providing soldiers with a body-worn system that integrates advanced AR and VR technologies, IVAS will:

  • Enables beyond line-of-sight perception capabilities for warfighters
  • Increases survivability against drones
  • Accelerates mission command of unmanned systems
  • Enhances combat effectiveness
  • Tailors future program development to the Army's evolving needs
  • Aims for production at scale with lower unit costs

Anduril's investment in defense technology, military requirements and approach to manufacturing defense products aims to ensure future program development is specifically tailored to the evolving needs of the Army – expecting to result in production at scale and at lower unit cost.

Anduril to take reins of IVAS hardware and software development

Under the new agreement, pending Department of Defense approval, Anduril will assume oversight of production, future development of hardware and software and delivery timelines for the IVAS programme – expecting to bring Anduril's expertise in defence technology and manufacturing to the front of the project.

Microsoft Azure to power Anduril's AI development for IVAS

As part of the partnership, Microsoft Azure will also become Anduril's preferred hyperscale cloud platform for all workloads related to IVAS and Anduril AI technologies.

Azure, which offers commercial, US government and classified cloud services, provides high resiliency, sophisticated capabilities and advanced security designed to meet stringent compliance requirements – and the use of cloud computing is expected to enable seamless data integration and real-time insights critical to soldier effectiveness.

AI will also play a foundational role in all technical innovations for national security missions, with the cloud being essential to delivering AI whenever and wherever it is needed.

Corporate Vice President of Mixed Reality at Microsoft, Robin Seiler

Robin Seiler, Corporate Vice President of Mixed Reality at Microsoft, stated: “We are incredibly proud of the work our teams have put in to help the US army transform its concept of a soldier-borne, AR headset into reality with the IVAS program.

“Our Soldier-Centered Design approach helped reimagine technology development with the Army that continuously took in real-world soldier feedback to develop a product that soldiers love,”

Leveraging AI and cloud technologies

Microsoft's advanced cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities will continue to provide a robust backbone for the program, enabling seamless data integration and real-time insights critical to soldier effectiveness.
