Tech giant Microsoft promotes UK chief Clare Barclay to regional role as former AWS executive Darren Hardman steps up to lead British operation

Microsoft has announced changes to its European leadership structure as part of its strategy to accelerate AI adoption across the region.

Clare Barclay, who has led Microsoft’s UK operation through the recent surge in AI development and who was named #1 in Technology Magazine’s Top 100 Women in Technology 2024, will become President of Enterprise & Industry for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The appointment will see her oversee industry innovation across 120 markets, at a time when enterprises are increasingly integrating AI into their operations.

During her 26-year tenure at Microsoft, including her time as UK CEO, Clare Barclay established partnerships with major British institutions including the London Stock Exchange Group, which provides financial market infrastructure and data services, mobile operator Vodafone, and retailer Sainsbury's. These partnerships have focused on deploying Microsoft's cloud and AI technologies to transform business operations.

The leadership transition brings together executives with extensive experience in cloud computing and enterprise technology. Barclay's long-standing relationship with Microsoft, combined with her understanding of the European market, positions her to drive the company's AI strategy across the diverse EMEA region.

Who is Darren Hardman, new Microsoft UK CEO?

Darren Hardman will succeed Barclay as CEO of Microsoft UK from November 1st. Having joined Microsoft in May 2023, he previously served as CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) UK & Ireland, Amazon's cloud computing division and before that as President of Avanade EMEA, a Microsoft-focused technology consultancy.

Darren Hardman has been named the new CEO of Microsoft UK

At Microsoft, Hardman established the Software and Digital Platforms division in EMEA, focusing on serving digital-native businesses and independent software vendors (ISVs) - companies that develop and sell software products that run on technology platforms. This experience in building technology ecosystems aligns with Microsoft's strategy to expand its AI capabilities across the UK market.

Microsoft continues UK investment programme

The leadership changes come as Microsoft implements its £2.5 billion UK investment programme, announced in November 2023. The investment includes expanding data centre infrastructure in Newport and London, adding more than 20,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) - specialised chips used for training large AI models.

Microsoft maintains a significant presence in the United Kingdom through its network of offices and research facilities. The company currently employs 6,000 people across its UK offices in Reading, Paddington, Manchester and Edinburgh, with a research laboratory in Cambridge. Its partner network encompasses 34,000 UK companies employing 570,000 people.

The company's Microsoft Experience Centre on Oxford Circus serves as a demonstration hub for its latest technologies, while its Cambridge research laboratory contributes to global developments in computer science and artificial intelligence.

Strategic significance

The appointments reflect Microsoft's focus on AI development and deployment across Europe. The company's investment in UK data centre infrastructure signals its commitment to building AI capabilities while addressing data sovereignty requirements - regulations that specify where data can be stored and processed.

Microsoft's expansion of GPU capacity indicates its preparation for increased demand in AI model training and deployment, as more organisations adopt machine learning technologies for business operations.

Ralph Haupter, Microsoft's EMEA President, says: "Clare and Darren both bring unique strengths and insights to their new roles. With this strategic leadership transition, we will bring the best of our industry and AI execution to our UK and EMEA customers."
