SAP's Technology: Transforming the NHL’s Team Operations

Professional sports management has developed alongside digital transformation over the past decade, evolving from paper-based processes to sophisticated data platforms.
In ice hockey, where teams operate under strict salary caps and complex contract structures, technology adoption has become essential for maintaining competitive advantage.
Now, SAP and The National Hockey League (NHL) have introduced a new data management application for team executives: The SAP-NHL Front Office App for iPad.
This app centralises access to key information, allowing general managers and hockey operations departments to monitor roster planning, salary cap considerations and player contracts through a consolidated interface.
It’s the latest development in a decade-long technology partnership between SAP and the NHL, which has previously delivered real-time analytics to team benches, supported sustainability efforts and enhanced statistics on digital platforms.
How SAP’s Business Technology Platform powers NHL decision-making
The new application runs on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), a cloud computing environment that enables organisations to develop, deploy and manage business applications – consolidating multiple NHL data sources into a unified system – organising information into three main sections.
The SAP-NHL Front Office App for iPad includes three core sections:
League View: Showcases each club's current and projected off-season cap situation, a draft grid tracking future picks, transaction history and conditional picks.
It includes daily transaction alerts with customisable filters.
Team View: Presents a centralised overview of player contracts for the current season and eight years ahead.
Advanced filters sort by roster status, position and contract details, highlighting free agents and cap impacts.
Player View: Provides comprehensive NHL player profiles, including biographical details, contract history, game logs and transaction history for a complete career overview.
NHL expands iPad technology from bench to boardroom environment
The app builds upon the NHL's existing technology infrastructure, which has incorporated iPad devices in game operations since 2017.
These tablets deliver real-time analytics and video footage to coaches and players during matches.
“For over a decade, SAP and the NHL have worked together to advance and enhance the game through cutting-edge technologies,” an SAP statement accompanying the launch said.
"Each innovation has put data at the centre of decision-making for League stakeholders, players, coaches and fans alike.”
The app forms part of the NHL's broader initiative to standardise the distribution of official player and team data from its Central Registry – which ensures all NHL organisations have consistent access to critical league information.
By delivering this data through a mobile application, team executives gain flexibility to access information during meetings, while travelling or from any location with network connectivity – addressing the need for immediate access to data in time-sensitive situations such as trade discussions or contract negotiations.
The role of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP SuccessFactors
The NHL has recently selected additional SAP technologies including SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, an enterprise resource planning solution – and SAP SuccessFactors, a human resources management system, to enhance workforce management and streamline administrative operations.
This expansion of technology into front-office operations addresses specific challenges in NHL team management – as hockey executives must navigate complex salary cap regulations, monitor multi-season contracts, and track player movement through various transaction mechanisms.
Prior to this centralised platform, these tasks required accessing multiple systems and data sources.
Now, the SAP-NHL Front Office App consolidates this information, providing instant visibility into key metrics that influence strategic decisions.
