Lufthansa Group, Adyen and Klarna team up to bring buy-now-pay-later to flights and travel, helping passengers spread their costs via flexible instalments

Lufthansa Group is integrating flexible payment technology into its booking process through a new partnership with the financial technology platform Adyen and the payments network Klarna.

This collaboration will introduce buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services for flight bookings, extending a payment model common in e-commerce to the travel sector. The services will provide travellers in the United States and parts of mainland Europe with more choice in how they pay for their journeys.

The partnership comes as businesses respond to global consumer demand for more convenient and efficient payment methods. Klarna has already established similar flexible payment arrangements with other travel brands, including Airbnb, Booking.com and Hotels.com.

Through this new arrangement with Lufthansa, customers will be able to choose a ‘Pay Later’ option to book flights immediately and pay after a set period or select a ‘Financing’ option to distribute the cost of their booking over a longer timeframe.

Powering airline payments with fintech integration

The collaboration leverages Adyen's financial technology platform to facilitate Klarna’s payment solutions within Lufthansa’s checkout system.

This move could show a growing trend of legacy industries adopting fintech innovations to enhance customer experience. For Lufthansa customers, the integration is designed to provide a smoother and more flexible booking process.

The initial rollout of the service began in November for Lufthansa customers.

David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, says: “Travel is one of the most meaningful investments people make. Together, we’re giving travellers the confidence to book their trips their way – with more flexibility, transparency, and choice than ever before.”

Leveraging digital capabilities and established partnerships

Adyen's role is to power the global checkout experience, building on a partnership with Klarna that has existed for more than a decade. Adyen provides the payment processing infrastructure that enables merchants to offer various payment methods.

This latest development with Lufthansa is an extension of that long-standing integration.

“At Lufthansa Group, we put the needs and a convenient booking experience of our customers at the centre of everything we do,” explains Oliver Schmitt, Managing Director Lufthansa Group Digital Hangar.

“By leveraging our digital capabilities and partnering with Klarna and Adyen, we can now offer greater choice and flexibility in how customers pay for their journeys.”

The integration aims to provide a reliable and smooth transaction process for travellers. “We’re proud to support Lufthansa Group with our technology and our global payments network,” says Alexa von Bismarck, President EMEA at Adyen.

“By combining Adyen’s reliable infrastructure with Klarna’s innovative payment solutions, Lufthansa Group customers will benefit from a smooth and flexible checkout experience.”

A phased rollout across global markets

Lufthansa Group has initiated the rollout in its home markets and other key countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

According to Lufthansa Group, there are plans for a wider expansion across the entire Lufthansa Group collective, with a focus on Lufthansa Network Airlines.

This expansion plan includes Austrian Airlines, SWISS and Brussels Airlines. Lufthansa Group has sights set to complete the rollout across these airlines by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

This phased approach suggests a strategic implementation of the new payment technology across its various brands.

The collaboration between Adyen and Klarna has previously been extended to other areas, with the pair announcing last year the rollout of BNPL options to over 450,000 in-store payment terminals across Europe, North America and Australia.
