Meta has announced new global consumer tiers for its social media apps alongside advanced AI subscriptions, capping free capabilities for heavy tech users

Meta is preparing to launch paid subscription tiers for its AI tools on social media applications.

The firm is grouping these new offerings under a single umbrella brand called Meta One, signalling a significant shift in how it intends to monetise its user base.

The strategy includes the introduction of Meta’s first-ever paid AI subscriptions: Meta One Plus at US$7.99 per month and Meta One Premium at US$19.99 per month.

While a basic version of Meta AI will remain free, heavy users will eventually hit usage limits.

The paid tiers are designed to unlock deeper computing power for complex tasks, as well as advanced video and image generation tools.

The Premium plan, in particular, grants users more capacity for high-compute queries.

According to Naomi Gleit, Meta’s Head of Product, these AI-focused plans are designed to “give people who use Meta AI more to work with, more capacity, bigger, more complex requests, and more room to create for businesses and creators”.

Naomi explained on Instagram that the company is offering premium tools to help users “enhance presence, supercharge content, automate tasks and protect [their] brand”.

The AI subscription rollout follows Meta’s recent debut of its Muse Spark AI model, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs under the leadership of Alexandr Wang.

Testing for these AI tiers is scheduled to begin next month in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia, with plans to integrate benefits for Meta’s AI glasses in the future.

Expanding the social tiers

Alongside the AI features, Meta is launching global Plus subscription plans tailored to its social platforms:

  • Instagram Plus (US$3.99/mo): Offers advanced analytics like aggregate Story rewatch statistics, the ability to extend Stories past 24 hours and custom profile fonts.
  • Facebook Plus (US$3.99/mo): A similar suite of expression and tracking tools.
  • WhatsApp Plus (US$2.99/mo): Focuses on personalisation, giving users exclusive chat themes, custom ringtones and extra pinned chats.

Meta is also piloting higher-end tiers for professional users in select international markets.

The Meta One Essential plan (US$14.99/mo) bundles verification with bio-linking tools, while the Meta One Advanced plan (US$49.99/mo) offers growth features, such as search visibility boosts and automated follow invitations.

The pre-existing Meta Verified service will continue to operate independently for the time being.

A new era of revenue

This push into subscriptions represents a calculated effort by Meta to extract more value from saturated social media markets.

While these user fees currently represent a minor fraction of the company’s financial empire – Meta’s Q1 2026 report shows its non-advertising segment brought in US$1.29bn in the first quarter compared to a staggering US$55bn from advertising – Wall Street responded favourably to the news, sending Meta’s stock up roughly 3% to 4% following the announcements.

By aligning with the paid models of rivals like OpenAI and Google, Meta is positioning itself to heavily monetise the next generation of consumer AI.
