With 78% of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) reporting that AI-driven threats are significantly affecting their organisations, it's clear that modern businesses are in need of some new-age expertise.

Darktrace, a firm headquartered in Cambridge, England, has started to established itself as a force in the field of AI-driven cybersecurity.

Led by CEO Jill Popelka, who took the helm in September 2024, the company has solidified its standing at the cutting edge of autonomous threat identification and response.

Established in 2013 by a group of mathematicians and intelligence specialists from Cambridge University, Darktrace has been helping to usher in the next generation of cybersecurity, with its Self-Learning AI treading new ground.

Instead of depending on pre-programmed threat databases or historical attack information, its technology builds a fluid comprehension of normal operational patterns within each distinct organisation.

"Attackers will always evolve, so we focus on the one thing that we can learn everything about – the organisations we're designed to protect," Jill told PwC UK in their 2025 CEO Survey.

This principle forms the foundation of Darktrace's methodology for tackling an increasingly complex threat environment where traditional security solutions prove inadequate.

How autonomous AI can improve security

The foundation of Darktrace's solution is its Enterprise Immune System, which utilises unsupervised machine learning to continuously monitor every user, device and workload across a network.

This technology recognises subtle departures from standard activity, facilitating the identification of unprecedented attacks without needing manual reconfiguration or updates.

Nicole Eagan, Co-Founder of Darktrace, said in April 2025: "If an insider or an external adversary attempts a very targeted, specific novel attack, we can spot it and contain it in seconds."

This capability becomes especially vital as cybercriminals progressively utilise AI-enhanced attacks that conventional signature-based defences fail to identify.

The company's Autonomous Response technology, Antigena, constitutes a major breakthrough in real-time threat neutralisation.

Unlike traditional security systems that depend on human intervention, Antigena automatically quarantines malicious behaviour while maintaining legitimate business functions. This targeted methodology ensures that organisations sustain productivity even during active cyber events.

Supporting the autonomous structure is the Cyber AI Analyst, which mirrors human cyber analysts by performing independent investigations and producing natural language reports.

"The AI takes an organisation, learns its patterns and constantly analyses them to the same standard as an experienced security analyst.

"It identifies what needs escalating or takes immediate action if it needs to, without disrupting everything else that's happening in the business. It's like having an additional 30 experienced security analysts on your team," Jill explained in an interview with PwC UK.

Darktrace's innovation has resulted in exceptional commercial achievements. The company currently protects nearly 10,000 customers spanning 110 countries and maintains more than 2,400 employees worldwide.

The company received recognition as a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Network Detection and Response, confirming its status as an industry benchmark.

Its expansion path reached its pinnacle with its £4.3bn (US$5.9bn) acquisition by private equity firm Thoma Bravo, which concluded in late 2024.

Jill, who contributes over two decades of expertise from global technology companies including SAP SuccessFactors, Snap and Accenture, highlights the company's customer-focused methodology.

"The potential of Darktrace is enormous - our technology has never been more critical to organisations around the world and our AI-native capabilities position us at the forefront of the ever-changing cyber security market," she said upon her appointment as CEO in September 2024.

A vision of the future

Darktrace's collaboration with Amazon Web Services demonstrates its dedication to scalable, cloud-native security solutions. The alliance allows the company to utilise AWS's global infrastructure while delivering 360-degree visibility across cloud environments.

Kyle Grady, Darktrace's Director of Cloud Alliances Marketing, says: "We've needed to build brand recognition in the US market. AWS is such a great partner for that because you can stand on the shoulders of giants."

The partnership tackles the increasing complexity of multi-cloud environments where traditional security methods struggle to maintain oversight and control.

By integrating its AI directly into cloud infrastructures, Darktrace ensures that threats can be identified and eliminated without the delays associated with external security processing.

Moving forward, Jill highlighted the necessity for organisations to predict security vulnerabilities as digital transformation accelerates in her PwC interview.

"As organisations transform, it's crucial to anticipate potential security blind spots. The pace of evolution in cyber threats is rapid. Bad actors are constantly creating new ways to attack and extort organisations.

"Human defenders can't keep up with the pace of change we're seeing so there is always going to be a blind spot of knowledge."

Darktrace's strategy for tackling these challenges focuses on sustaining what Jill characterises as a "living, learning culture" concentrated on comprehending customer challenges and developing innovations that address them directly.

This philosophy ensures the company will continue spearheading the AI cybersecurity revolution as threats develop and organisations increasingly rely on intelligent, autonomous defence systems.
