How AWS & Tata are Building India’s Largest AI-Ready Network

Tata Communications is working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch an advanced AI-optimised network across India, establishing one of the country’s largest and most sophisticated national long-distance networks.
This cutting-edge infrastructure connects three key AWS data centre regions — Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai — to provide the backbone required to fuel next-generation AI and ML workloads across India.
The aim of the collaboration is to accelerate the adoption of Gen AI and cloud innovation in India, empowering businesses to scale AI applications with unprecedented speed, capacity and security.
Addressing the demands of compute-intensive AI workloads in India
The new network leverages Tata’ state-of-the-art communications technology to deliver high-bandwidth, ultra-low latency pathways between the three major AWS infrastructure hubs.
The deployment is Tata Communications’ largest ever network project in India in terms of size, scale and bandwidth, addressing the demands of compute-intensive AI workloads, including Generative AI, 5G and HPC.
"This association marks our largest ever National Long-Distance program and showcases Tata Communications’ unparalleled capability to support large-capacity, complex projects requiring scaled network solutions,” says Genius Wong, EVP of Core and Next-Gen Connectivity Services and CTO at Tata Communications.
“AI is transforming industries globally and our collaboration with AWS positions us at the forefront of this revolution in India.
“Together, we’re enabling a network that not only meets the current demands but anticipates the needs of tomorrow.
“By building a tailored network solution we're ushering in an AI era in India, reinforcing our position as the long-term partner of choice for global technology leaders.”
AWS’ Indian data centre presence
AWS operates two primary data centre regions in Mumbai and Hyderabad, as well as maintaining AWS Direct Connect and AWS Edge Network infrastructure in Chennai.
By interlinking these locations through a resilient, national long-haul network, the partnership creates powerful infrastructure that supports seamless data transfer and processing essential to AI and ML applications, minimising lag and maximising throughput.
This next-generation connectivity is underpinned by AWS’ custom network technologies, which enhance security, availability and performance across the entire network fabric.
Ensuring data integrity and compliance with regulatory frameworks remains paramount, which is critical for building trust in cloud services handling sensitive industrial, financial and healthcare data sets.
"We are excited to work with Tata Communications to establish an advanced in-country network in India,” says Jesse Dougherty, Vice President for Network Edge Services at Amazon Web Services.
“The infrastructure is designed to support the most data intensive workloads, like 5G, Gen AI and high performance computing.
“This collaboration with Tata Communications will further enable our customers in India to innovate at scale with cloud and Gen AI and drive growth in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.”
What will Tata and AWS’ network enable?
The impact of this network is multifold.
Benefits of Tata and AWS’ AI-ready network include:
- AI-powered innovation enablement: Indian enterprises across the likes of healthcare, finance, education and retail will be equipped to build, train and deploy scalable AI applications more efficiently. This capability, Tata expects, will spur a wave of innovation, enabling widespread digital transformation across India’s rapidly expanding digital economy.
- Enhanced network performance: The express routes will dramatically reduce latency, making real-time AI inference and large-scale model training faster and more cost-effective — a critical factor for Gen AI and other advanced workloads.
- Support for emerging technologies: By hosting infrastructure optimised for AI, 5G connectivity and HPC, the network aligns with India’s technological evolution plans and global trends toward data-intensive digital services.
This initiative not only looks ahead to what’s possible but reflects technological shifts happening across India right now, with broader moves toward AI-optimised, cloud-centric infrastructures in emerging markets.
Tata Communications’ extensive network expertise with AWS’ global cloud capabilities will position India to become a significant hub for AI applications, accelerating digital transformation across industries and setting new standards for network performance, scalability, and security in the region.
