Tesla rolls out xAI's Grok assistant subscription to its vehicles across Europe, featuring multiple personality modes amid concerns of driver distraction

Tesla announced plans to bring Grok AI to vehicles across Europe and the UK following the start of its initial rollout.

The AI service requires a monthly subscription, despite drivers likely owning their vehicles outright.

At £9.99 (US$13.50) per month, the Premium Connectivity package includes live traffic visualisation and satellite-view maps alongside the AI assistant.

Drivers and passengers can interact with Grok during journeys, with UK drivers able to activate the Leo British voice.

Grok is available on these vehicles, in addition to Model S, Model X and Cybertruck vehicles.

The system is also launching in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Portugal and Spain for eligible electric vehicles.

The introduction of this technology raises questions about potential driver distraction, particularly when passengers engage with the system whilst the driver concentrates on the road.

Functionality and potential hazards

Grok AI could offer practical capabilities for drivers, including voice-activated navigation commands, destination setting and route adjustments whilst driving.

The system can also interpret dashboard alerts and reference the vehicle owner's manual.

However, the constant availability of an AI agent for interaction could present risks for drivers and passengers, particularly when children are present.

Grok features dedicated children's modes such as Story Time and Trivia Game, whilst regular modes include Storyteller and Conspiracy.

Mike Nelson, a partner at Nelson Law and automotive safety researcher, owns a Tesla with Grok features in the US, where they have been available since the first rollout in July 2025. Nelson suggests that chatbot technology introduces a "distraction layer" for drivers.

"Research shows that even in hands-free mode, you are more distracted when you are talking on the phone and driving. Adding Grok introduces more stimuli," Mike adds.

Questions over content moderation

Whilst standard modes are accessible to all users, those over 18 can access additional modes including Unhinged, Sexy, Motivation, Romantic and Argumentative.

Grok's section on the Tesla website does not include information on how this is moderated, nor is there publicly available detail on how the technology prevents users under 18 from accessing mature content.

The approach to safety could be questioned, as Elon Musk, owner of both Tesla and Grok, appears to position Grok as an AI model that is less "woke" than competing systems. Musk posted on X that "Grok must win or we will be ruled by an insufferably woke and sanctimonious AI".

Tesla's website states that interactions with Grok are private and secure, with all conversations remaining anonymous and unlinked to the driver or vehicle. Whilst this represents an important privacy measure, it could also create opportunities for misuse.

Grok is currently facing regulatory scrutiny from the ICO and Ofcom, as investigations continue into the chatbot following its ability to create deepfakes, which is illegal in the UK.

Tesla and xAI have not confirmed whether they can restrict minors' access to Grok in Tesla vehicles.

Industry Perspectives on Integration

Despite concerns around distraction, Grok's hands-free integration in Tesla vehicles is receiving praise from some industry figures.

David Swift, Funding Assessor at the UK Space Agency, wrote on LinkedIn following the initial UK rollout: "Traffic can be corrosive. Grok's conversational mode offers a curious antidote: affirmations, breathing prompts, even a wry joke about British weather when the rain begins its inevitable descent.

"While no AI replaces human connection, the ability to diffuse frustration without taking hands off the wheel is not trivial."

Alvin Foo, Venture Partner at Zero2Launch, also praised the technology: "The Grok + Tesla integration is actually super elegant. It's the cleanest preview right now of how humans will move through the world with AI."

The integration could represent an early glimpse of everyday AI in vehicles, provided robust safety and privacy measures are maintained alongside the advanced features.
