Premier League giant Arsenal FC is embracing cutting-edge technology thanks to a partnership with NTT DATA to revolutionise supporter experiences worldwide

At a time when digital engagement is reshaping the sports landscape, football clubs are racing to harness technology to enhance fan experiences and drive growth.

Premier League clubs, competing in a league that generated £6.1 billion in revenue for the 2022/23 season, are at the forefront of this transformation. As smartphone penetration reaches an estimated 69% worldwide and 5G networks promise unprecedented connectivity, the potential for immersive, data-driven fan experiences is boundless.

To harness this potential, Arsenal Football Club has announced a groundbreaking multi-year partnership with NTT DATA, a global leader in digital business and IT services. This collaboration, which establishes NTT DATA as Arsenal’s first-ever Official Digital Transformation Partner, aims to redefine how the club’s estimated 600 million supporters worldwide engage with their team.

The partnership comes at a crucial time for the sports industry, which has been rapidly evolving in response to changing fan expectations and technological advancements. With the global sports market projected to top US$680bn by 2028, clubs are increasingly turning to digital solutions to enhance fan engagement, boost revenue streams and gain a competitive edge both on and off the pitch.

Arsenal’s Chief Commercial Officer, Juliet Slot, emphasised the strategic importance of this move: “Our ambition is to strengthen our connection with our supporters around the world so that we can serve them better. Enhancing our digital capabilities is an essential part of this journey where through service and connection to supporters we are able to drive forward our performance and our growth.”

The partnership will leverage NTT DATA’s extensive expertise in sports technology to elevate Arsenal's digital platforms, ensuring that supporters of the club’s men’s, women’s and junior teams experience unprecedented levels of engagement and interactivity.

NTT DATA to enable enhanced data analytics

One of the key focus areas of this collaboration will be the development of personalised supporter content. By harnessing cutting-edge data insights, Arsenal and NTT DATA aim to create unique, tailored experiences for each fan: a level of personalisation that is becoming increasingly critical in a world where supporters expect content that resonates with their individual preferences and behaviours.

Niccolo Spataro, CEO of NTT DATA in the UK and Ireland, highlighted the alignment between the two organisations: “Arsenal’s commitment to delivering exceptional experiences to supporters is pioneering and its goal of placing people at the heart of innovation aligns with NTT DATA's core values and approach to business. We look forward to partnering with Arsenal, using our expertise to deliver the digital transformation that helps Arsenal create truly remarkable experiences for its supporters worldwide.”

The partnership will also see the implementation of advanced data analytics tools, enabling Arsenal to offer supporters exclusive insights, promotions and offers. This move towards a more data-driven approach reflects a wider trend in the sports industry, where clubs are increasingly leveraging big data and analytics to inform decision-making both in terms of fan engagement and on-field performance.

Global supporter engagement is another crucial aspect of this partnership. With Arsenal boasting one of the largest and most diverse fan bases in world football, the ability to maintain meaningful connections with supporters across different time zones and cultures is essential. The digital transformation initiative aims to deepen these connections, ensuring that fans remain engaged and connected with the club regardless of their location.

NTT DATA has established itself as a transformation expert in the field, serving as the technology partner for major sporting events globally, including The Open golf championship and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. The company’s experience in implementing real-time data analysis, AI, digital twin, and Private 5G technologies at these events will undoubtedly inform their approach to enhancing the Arsenal supporter experience.

As clubs like Arsenal seek to expand their global reach and deepen supporter relationships, partnerships with technology firms are becoming increasingly common. These collaborations allow clubs to tap into expertise and resources that might not be available in-house, enabling them to stay at the forefront of digital innovation.

Juliet Slot summed up the potential impact of the partnership: “We're excited to welcome NTT DATA as our first Official Digital Transformation Partner. Through service and connection to supporters we are able to drive forward our performance and our growth.”
