Uber plans to roll out 20,000+ autonomous vehicles with Lucid and Nuro, targeting multi-hundred-million investment in self-driving robotaxi fleet by 2026

Driverless vehicles are all the rage at the moment, with many of the motoring industry’s major players making progress on their long-awaited projects this year.

Whenever a new technology is first created, it has to undergo rigorous periods of testing and feasibility, especially when it comes to high-risk sectors like mobility.

Naturally, when the product in question is a totally autonomous vehicle (AV), these tests have a tendency to stretch out over a number of years.

Right now, though, it seems like things are starting to creep toward real-world commercial deployments.

The latest development in this space comes from a well-matched trio: ride-hailing giant Uber has joined forces with luxury EV  manufacturer Lucid and self-driving technology specialist Nuro to create what they're calling a "next-generation premium global robotaxi programme".

The scale of ambition

Uber's plans are nothing if not ambitious.

The company is looking to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro's autonomous driving technology over the next six years, with the first launch scheduled for an unspecified major US city next year.

To put this in perspective, that's a fleet larger than many traditional taxi companies operate across entire countries.

The partnership is part of an investment worth hundreds of millions of dollars from Uber into both Nuro and Lucid, signalling serious commitment rather than just another pilot programme.

What makes this partnership particularly interesting, though, is how each company brings distinct strengths to the table.

Lucid’s contribution

Lucid’s Gravity SUV is the car of choice and it boasts an impressive 450-mile EPA estimated range, which is at the higher end of what is possible with EVs right now.

This is something that the firm’s interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, is especially proud of.

“This investment from Uber further validates Lucid's fully redundant zonal architecture and highly capable platform as ideal for autonomous vehicles, and our industry-leading range and spacious well-appointed interiors, as ideal for ridesharing,” he says.

Lucid’s electronic architecture is designed specifically for safety too, and it also provides drivers and passengers with spacious, premium interiors that will go down a treat for future users.

There’s also the belief that the software Lucid’s vehicles use are able to adapt to evolving technology, which future proofs the investment.

What Nuro brings to the table

Nuro is bringing the ‘Nuro Driver Level 4’ autonomy system to the fold — a technology with a proven track record.

All in, Nuro has five years of experience with driverless operations across multiple US cities and states, making it a veritable veteran of the AV sector.

This gives it access to invaluable real-world data that many of its competitors simply don't have.

“We believe this partnership will demonstrate what's possible when proven AV technology meets real-world scale,” says Jiajun Zhu, Co-Founder and CEO at Nuro.

The power of Uber's network

And as for Uber's contribution — its massive global platform speaks for itself.

Uber currently operates across 70 countries and handles 34 million trips a day, making it the indisputable king of all taxi networks.

The hope is that Uber’s existing userbase can be the launchpad for worldwide adoption of AVs.

"Autonomous vehicles have enormous potential to transform our cities for the better,” explains Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

“We're thrilled to partner with Nuro and Lucid on this new robotaxi programme, purpose-built just for the Uber platform."

What the partnership means going forward

If successful, this partnership could make a significant contribution to shaping the AV market in the next few years.

Uber seems determined to drive this change. Alongside its work with Lucid and Nuro, the US-based firm has also joined with Volkswagen to trial new AV models in Europe.

Car manufacturers and tech companies all see Uber as the perfect partner for this technology, and it’s easy to see why.

The size of Uber's platform — and its global influence — means millions of people could be in AVs in no time at all.

The question isn't whether robotaxis will become mainstream – it's who will get there first.

With proven technology, serious financial backing and a clear path to market, Uber, Lucid and Nuro could be first across the finish line.
