United Airlines will embrace Starlink to improve passenger experience
United Airlines is becoming a trailblazer in the aviation industry by adding Starlink to its fleet to enhance sky connectivity and passenger experience

Aviation lies at the heart of global progress and resilience, connecting people, goods and economies globally.

And, as we enter an increasingly digital world, the aviation industry must embrace sky connectivity to enhance the passenger experience, support real-time communication between aircraft and ground teams and adopt new emerging technologies such as IoT-enabled systems and predictive maintenance.

United Airlines is securing its position as a pioneer in the aviation industry through its ambition to bring the most reliable connectivity, satellite-based internet service in the sky to its passengers - Starlink.

The service will include many inflight entertainment experiences such as shopping, gaming and streaming services.

Access will be provided for all MileagePlus (its loyalty programme) customers at no charge.

United Airlines signed an agreement with SpaceX in September 2024 to integrate Starlink into the entirety of its fleet.

Richard Nunn, CEO of United MileagePlus

The air company strives for the debut commercial flight to take off on a United Embraer E-175 aircraft in Spring 2025.

Richard Nunn, CEO of United MileagePlus, explains: "We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can – as quickly as we can – is at the centre of it all,

"It's not only going to revolutionise the experience of flying United, but it's also going to unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn't be possible."

What is Starlink?

Starlink aims to provide low-latency, high-speed internet access across the world through its satellite-based internet service.

The service - which was created by SpaceX - strives to help remote, underserved and rural areas reach reliable connectivity.

Benefits of Starlink
  • Global coverage
  • High-speed internet
  • Low latency
  • Rapid deployment
  • User-friendly hardware
  • Internet access for moving platforms like airplanes and ships
  • Disaster response
  • Scalable network
  • Supports emerging technologies
  • Enhanced connectivity for businesses

How will Starlink transform connectivity in the aviation industry?

Starlink can reach an abundance of diverse internet needs through its range of flexible, innovative and scalable solutions for global connectivity.

Starlink overcomes traditional inflight Wi-Fi limitations through its extensive global coverage and caters to business travelers effectively through the low latency that guarantees seamless messaging and video conferencing.

Not only does this system enhance passenger experience by providing seamless gaming and streaming, but it also improves operational efficiency, safety and coordination by permitting real-time communication between ground teams and cockpit crews.

Starlink also permits proactive issue resolution and reduced aircraft downtime by supporting IoT and predictive maintenance.

The technology allows airlines to attract customers and offer new opportunities such as premium connectivity and online services, allowing airlines to differentiate themselves.

Starlink also helps take the first step towards a sustainable future for the aviation industry by facilitating more efficient flight routing, reducing flight consumption and carbon emissions through its enhanced connectivity.

United Airlines strives to have its first mainline Starlink-enabled plane in the air before the end of 2025 - highlighting its commitment to enhancing its excellence in technology.
