NestlĂ© has implemented what it describes as the world’s largest SAP S/4HANA Cloud enterprise upgrade, deploying Joule AI assistant across its operations

NestlĂ© has completed the first phase of what it describes as the world’s largest SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition implementation, migrating 50,000 users across 112 countries in its Asia, Oceania and Africa operations.

The deployment represents a shift in enterprise ERP strategy as companies race to embed AI capabilities within core business systems.

The implementation comes as SAP targets 400 embedded AI use cases across its cloud portfolio in 2025, with the technology provider positioning its Joule AI assistant as the interface layer between users and business processes.

NestlĂ© has integrated Joule, SAP’s conversational AI copilot, directly into its core business systems. The tool automates routine tasks and provides employees with real-time insights across the company's operations.

SAP has extended Joule to S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, automating journal uploads, service initiations and trade classifications.“Driving growth through innovation is a top priority,” says Anna Manz, NestlĂ©'s Chief Financial Officer and Head of Integrated Business Services.

“We are transforming our business to invest more boldly in the best opportunities. We need to combine great consumer insights and innovation with flexibility and scale, to provide great quality products to consumers around the world when, where and how they want them,” she says.

“This upgrade will help us build multi-year innovation pipelines, more agile production and digital-first marketing and sales platforms for areas like cold coffee, therapeutic pet food and modern cooking aids.”

The company operates on a single SAP ERP template across three geographical regions, covering 185 countries.

Nestlé transitioned from on-premise systems to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition in 2022, establishing the foundation for the current upgrade.

The company plans to complete the upgrade across its remaining global operations within two years, with the system processing supply chain, manufacturing, sales, finance and human resources operations through a unified platform.

“We are building a future-ready enterprise – one that works smarter and faster,” says Chris Wright, Nestlé’s Head of IT and Chief Information Officer.

“Having a common ERP system as our backbone is already a tremendous advantage for NestlĂ©. It provides a unified platform and data foundation that allows us to execute end-to-end and have visibility across our entire company and beyond,” he says.

The platform modifies how Nestlé handles retail order fulfilment, matching supply with demand in real time for in-store and online channels.

The system aims to reduce stock availability issues for consumers, while Nestlé’s procurement operations have moved to the cloud: creating spend visibility across global operations and standardising workflows.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud a leader in cloud ERP market

SAP S/4HANA Cloud has been recognised as a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Cloud ERP for multiple consecutive years, with the platform serving as the foundation for SAP's RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP offerings.

The cloud ERP market reached a valuation of US$44bn in 2023, driven by demand for systems that can integrate AI capabilities.

“Nestlé’s successful go-live of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition showcases how scale can be a strategic advantage for innovation,” explains Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE for Customer Services and Delivery.

“As one of the world's most recognizable and forward-thinking companies, with the go-live on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, the company exemplifies how cutting-edge technology empowers global brands to anticipate consumer trends, optimize operations, and deliver exceptional experiences at scale.”

SAP introduced S/4HANA in 2015 as a next-generation ERP suite built on the HANA in-memory database platform, designed to process data in real-time and simplify the ERP landscape.

The technology has since become the basis for enterprise digital transformation programmes across sectors.

The system provides Nestlé with data-driven decision-making capabilities, processing information in real time across reporting and planning processes.

The unified data foundation supports what the company describes as end-to-end visibility across its operations.

Joule now supports 11 languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Greek and Polish.

The assistant operates within SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and Private Edition deployments, with features that include context-based responses and integration with core business processes.

“With the upgrade, we gain more flexibility, capabilities and insights that will help us roll out new products globally faster to meet the needs of our customers and consumers. And with the use of AI and automation at scale, we’ll drive efficiency and effectiveness, throughout our value chain,” Chris says.
