The President and COO departs with a legacy of success, after he oversaw the release of the Nintendo Switch as well as some of the company's most popular games
Doug Bowser, the long-time President & COO of Nintendo of America, has announced he will retire at the end of the year, but leaves an extraordinary legacy

When Doug Bowser joined Nintendo more than a decade ago, it was clear that it was a match made in heaven.

Not only was the Japanese gaming giant gaining an experienced and storied executive, it was employing the namesake of one of its most iconic and beloved characters. From the off, this funny coincidence endeared Doug to the gaming community.

During his 10-year tenure with Nintendo of America, Doug more than repaid that affection shown to him in those early days, overseeing the release of some of Nintendo's most popular products ever, including the Switch, as well as the rebooted Zelda and Mario Kart games.

This week, though, he has announced his intention to retire at the end of 2025, with Devon Pritchard, a Nintendo veteran of 19 years, set to take his place at the beginning of 2026.

Devon, who is currently Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Revenue, Marketing & Consumer Experience, is a natural replacement for the outgoing President.

This transition comes at an good time for Nintendo, following the immensely successful launch of its new flagship console, the Switch 2.

Doug's legacy

In his decade at Nintendo, Doug has presided over some huge achievements, but none so significant as the release of the Nintendo Switch games console.

The extraordinary commercial success of the Switch, which was first launched in 2017, fundamentally altered Nintendo's market position after the disappointing performance of the Wii U console.

Until the Switch, the future of Nintendo as a major force in global game was in some doubt, with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One dominating the market.

Under Doug's leadership, though, the Switch was a revolutionary success, blending portable and widescreen gaming unlike any piece of hardware before it.

Doug also led Nintendo to expand beyond traditional gaming with a series of ventures including theme parks and films, broadening the company's revenue streams and brand presence.

"Leading Nintendo of America has been the honour of a lifetime," Doug says. "I am proud of what our team has accomplished in both business results and the experiences we've created for consumers."

Who is Doug's successor, Devon Pritchard?

While Doug has left some big shoes to fill, his successor, Devon Pritchard, will bring a huge amount of experience to the role.

She has worked across multiple Nintendo divisions in her nearly two decades with the firm, having held executive positions in Marketing, Business Affairs and Publisher Relations in recent years.

Her appointment represents a continuation of Nintendo's strategic focus on consumer experience and brand expansion.

"My focus will be continuing to build on Nintendo's legacy of surprising and delighting our long-time fans, while at the same time welcoming new players into the Nintendo family," Devon says.

The new leadership structure will also see Satoru Shibata join Nintendo of America as CEO whilst maintaining his role at Nintendo in Japan.

The market context

The Switch 2's early success suggests Nintendo has maintained its unique position in the portable console hybrid market, though sustaining this momentum will be crucial for Pritchard's tenure.

Nintendo's President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged Doug's contributions over the years, saying: "During his tenure, Doug made numerous contributions to bring smiles to the faces of people connected to Nintendo."

The company has sold more than 5.9 billion video games and more than 860 million hardware units globally, establishing franchises that extend far beyond traditional gaming audiences.

Strategic continuity expected

People in the industry expect continuity in Nintendo's approach under Devon's leadership, given her extensive involvement in the company's recent strategic initiatives.

The focus on expanding Nintendo's intellectual property beyond gaming into broader entertainment markets appears set to continue.

"Devon, who will become the next President, has also made many contributions to Nintendo over the years," Shuntaro says, expressing confidence in the transition.

Nintendo's integrated hardware-software model remains central to its competitive strategy, differentiating it from pure software publishers and hardware manufacturers in the gaming sector.
