Mountain Warehouse Revamps its Ecommerce with BigCommerce

Mountain Warehouse, the global outdoor clothing and equipment retailer, has replaced its legacy system with a new platform from BigCommerce.
Founded in 1997, Mountain Warehouse operates more than 400 stores worldwide and serves more than five million customers across the UK, US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
BigCommerce, powered by IT service management company Commerce, is a flexible ecommerce platform provider that aims to help brands, retailers and manufacturers to adapt and connect with easy-to-use tools.
The firm helped Mountain Warehouse to replace a decade-old system that had become increasingly difficult to scale, with significant development resources required to maintain and support ageing infrastructure.
“Moving away from our legacy platform was critical to unlocking the next phase of Mountain Warehouse’s growth,” says Simon Neale, Chief Technology Officer at Mountain Warehouse.
“With BigCommerce, we now have the flexibility to innovate faster, integrate best-of-breed technologies and focus our engineering efforts on delivering better customer experiences rather than maintaining core infrastructure.”
Mountain Warehouse also had challenges with speed to market, security and the ability to experiment with modern technologies.
By adopting a flexible new system built on BigCommerce, Mountain Warehouse is now able to launch new features and initiatives much faster. This change allows the company to reduce the time spent maintaining its old, custom core technology.
The new platform also brings improved security, reliability and compliance with necessary rules.
Finally, it allows for easier and more flexible connection with both external third-party software and Mountain Warehouse’s own internal solutions.
The partners behind the new platform
Mountain Warehouse’s new online store is built using a modern, flexible set of technologies, with BigCommerce serving as the main engine for all commerce activities.
For a fast and responsive shopper experience, the customer-facing side of the site is powered by BigCommerce’s Catalyst and hosted on Vercel.
Content on the site is managed using Contentful, which provides a content solution for over 4,000 organisations including 30% of the Fortune 500. Software firm Algolia handles the search function and helps to personalise results for shoppers by responding to user signals as they happen.
To make purchasing simple, the system supports several major payment methods including Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The company also uses Dotdigital to automate its marketing communications.
This entire structure allows Mountain Warehouse to use specialised tools for each function and they have added custom software to connect everything and manage key operations like inventory, pricing, customer information and shipping.
