As tariffs and geopolitical tensions make global trade more complex, SAP explores how businesses must adapt in order to navigate trade pressures

In recent months, talk of tariffs, trade and geopolitics has been unavoidable all across the global economy, but especially in the tech sector.

These externalities have led to a great deal of uncertainty, which is always bad for business. It is in times like this that resilience is of the highest importance to companies.

SAP, one of the world's largest and most influential technology companies, knows this better than most. In a new study, the German firm has looked into the impacts that global instability has on supply chains.

In its analysis, SAP offers a series of invaluable insights for businesses that are looking to shore up their defences to global shocks, with a particular emphasis on the role technology can play therein.

The relationship between technology and resilience

Enterprises that forecast global disruptions and incorporate them into their technological strategies are better equipped to handle unpredictability.

Understanding and navigating potential challenges through digital tools enables businesses to minimize risks effectively. Strategies include adopting subsidies, managing export restrictions, and adhering to regulatory changes.

Such proactive measures, supported by technology, are essential as governments worldwide impose actions that necessitate swift adaptation from enterprises.

Significant policy amendments can trigger extensive repercussions across digital supply chains, posing severe challenges if firms remain unprepared.

Manuel Flubacher and Richard Downs, the writers of SAP's report, are keen to point out that digital regulations within the EU can affect US tech firms.

After US President Donald Trump proposed a 30% tariff on EU exports, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, bit back.

"Imposing 30% tariffs on EU exports would disrupt essential transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses,, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic," she explained.

"At the same time, we will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required."

How to protect a supply chain

SAP articulates five strategic imperatives for businesses aimed at enhancing technological resilience.

Prepare for Paradigm Shifts: Technological adaptation is necessitated by evolving trade barriers. SAP Global Trade Services (GTS) enhances efficiency, mitigates risks and expedites supply chain processes through automation and streamlined trade compliance.

Utilising SAP Business Network (SBN) facilitates adherence to global regulations and ensures supply chain transparency, empowering companies to align with worldwide market demands seamlessly.

Diversify Technological Markets: A singular market dependency heightens vulnerability to shifts. Extending operations globally and integrating AI-driven solutions like SAP Integrated Business Planning (SAP IBP) optimizes supplier networks, fortifying digital supply chain resilience.

Track Global Tech Trends: Understanding geopolitical dynamics through real-time insights powered by SAP BTP enables businesses to swiftly tailor strategies according to macroeconomic and policy evolutions.

Enhance Collaborative Technological Networks: Building robust supply chains necessitates international collaborations facilitated by SAP’s suite of platforms. Maintaining transparency with suppliers mitigates disruptions, fostering sustainability.

Implement Tech-Driven Trade Countermeasures: Addressing trade conflicts involves anticipating retaliatory economic measures. SAP solutions allow companies to simulate potential disruptions, reassessing strategies like sourcing plans or contracts to remain agile.

The importance of collaboration

Businesses must strategically deploy technology in anticipation of dynamic trade climates, rather than responding reactively to geopolitical events.

“Instead of reacting defensively, businesses and policymakers should work together to find cooperative solutions," SAP's report explains.

Engaging in policy dialogues and fortifying trade partnerships through technological collaboration is paramount.

“By focusing on long-term cooperation instead of short-term protectionism, businesses can help create a stable and prosperous trade environment,” the writers continue.

This sentiment advocates for leveraging advanced technology and strategic alliances to forge enduringly resilient digital supply chains, even amid geopolitical upheaval and economic overhauls.
