Microsoft hires new CISO for 2024 in security team shake-up

Last week (December 2023), it was announced that Microsoft would be appointing Igor Tsyganskiy as its new Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

With an extensive background in technology and security, Tsyganskiy will assume the role effective 1st January 2024. The news also comes in the midst of Microsoft having a large leadership reshuffle within its security team, with current CISO Bret Arsenault set to leave his position and become Chief Security Advisor at the company next year.

Posting on LinkedIn, Tsyganskiy says: “I am humbled and honoured to take the responsibility of protecting Microsoft with a large and dedicated community of security professionals all over the world.” 

Working to protect Microsoft, and its customers, from the cyber threat landscape

Tsyganskiy will support the tech giant in achieving further digital transformations and security measures within the company. He is a technologist and dynamic leader with a career spanning high-scale and high-security environments. He holds knowledge and experience from his previous role as a Chief Information Strategy Officer, in addition to his previous roles outside of Microsoft.

Prior to joining the company, Tsyganskiy served as chief technology officer (CTO) at Bridgewater Associates LP, a hedge fund that services institutional clients, including pension funds, endowments, foundations, foreign governments and central banks. 

He has also worked as Senior Vice President of Product Management at Salesforce Inc. and was the head of the advanced technology group at SAP SE.

Charlie Bell, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Security, highlighted on LinkedIn that the security leadership shakeup is part of Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative. The initiative was announced by Microsoft in November 2023 and is an internal company programme designed to further develop its security and software offerings.

Bret Arsenault, who was CISO at Microsoft for 14 years, has been reassigned to a security advisory role. His deputy, Aanchal Gupta, was reportedly removed from the team and will be moving to the Office Product Group within the company. 

This news also comes in the wake of Microsoft having experienced data leaks earlier in 2023, revealing that hackers had been able to breach sensitive government emails. The company, alongside fellow industry leaders, have consistently been calling for greater global transparency concerning cybersecurity incidents such as this so that threat detection and response can improve.

With over 10,500+ security and threat intelligence experts around the world, Microsoft is consistently providing valuable insights to governments and enterprises on cybersecurity. The company already synthesises 64 trillion signals daily, uses sophisticated data analytics, in addition to boasting AI algorithms to protect against cyber threats.

The company is further looking to see how it can implement more stringent security operations, in addition to advancing new technologies like AI for risk management and prevention.
