This story is one of migration, transformation, and digitalisation. As we uncover insights into the journey of RB Global (RB), and the formation of its cybersecurity team and security operations centre, we learn more about the leader that underwent potentially the toughest enrollment process for his current role. More importantly, this particular individual was tasked with building a 30-strong team of cyber analysts to combat digital challenges for RB and its clients.

Guy Dulberger, the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of RB Global., is the man leading the cutting-edge cybersecurity team for the brand of companies. Born and raised in Israel, Dulberger has put himself in career environments that led him down the path of cyber, having educated himself in computer systems networking and telecommunications at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. His foundational experience combined with his further leadership training in 2021, brought him to the position he serves in today.

After serving in the Israeli defence forces, Dulberger made a significant transition, moving to Canada right before the Y2K bubble. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new country and language, Dulberger settled into his new environment, in which his next career leg began. His entrance into the world of technology was a chance occurrence, driven by his innate talent with computers. As he said himself: "I went into computer science, not knowing that I'm going to work with technology or cyber, but I just happened to be really good with that."

The beginning of his professional journey saw Dulberger explore various aspects of IT, from working on healthcare projects to managing large call centres. Early in his IT career, he had a stint at IBM, where he juggled security projects while supporting a vast user base, providing a solid foundation for his future endeavours. Dulberger’s versatile approach to technology became more evident the further he ventured into the digital landscape—from helpdesk to system administration, and from networking to security.

2008 marked a pivotal year for Dulberger as the year he branded himself an entrepreneur. He set up his own company, focusing on dark fibre and co-location, paving the way for cloud innovations even before giants like AWS dominated the scene. However, a career-altering opportunity beckoned when a client, a hedge fund in Toronto, recruited him full-time. This new role exposed him to the fast-paced world of investment, high-frequency trading, and the critical importance of high-availability systems.

Six years ago, Dulberger entered into his role as CISO of RB, marking his longest tenure with a single company. When he joined, RB was in the throes of transformation, evolving into a technology-driven entity. The decision to conduct live auctions online was a game-changer, prompting the company to prioritise cybersecurity, having to pay attention to the protection it allowed its buyers. Dulberger reflected on this transformative phase, noting, "I joined when we just started to build a security team and I was essentially the first cybersecurity executive for the company." Under his guidance, the company has come a long way in establishing a robust cybersecurity infrastructure.

Dulberger's story shows testament to his adaptability, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence—and a little bit about unknowing natural talent. With roots in Israel, a solid foundation in tech from Canada, and a global perspective developed at RB, Dulberger's career is now driven by the team around him and stresses the importance of mental health among cybersecurity teams.
