Crestron Tech Powers FC Barcelona’s Smart Stadium Overhaul

There was a time when a football stadium only needed to do one thing well: host a match for 90 minutes, once a week. But the era of the passive sports venue is dead.
Today, major sports franchises are drastically ramping up their technology investment with the goal of transforming arenas into hyper-connected, multi-purpose digital hubs.
A prime example of this shift is in Barcelona, Spain, where the Spotify Camp Nou stadium – home to FC Barcelona – is currently undergoing a €1.6 bn (US$1.8bn) renovation to expand from holding 62,652 spectators to 105,000.
The project, known as Espai Barça, is also focused on modernising the venue.
All renovations are set to be completed by late 2027 and the stadium is operating on reduced capacity while work progresses.
Building a continuous digital ecosystem
FC Barcelona has partnered with Crestron Electronics, a global provider of smart home and workplace tech.
Crestron was named the Official Smart Hospitality Systems partner for the project and will embed an underlying digital infrastructure across the 100,000-plus capacity venue.
Every single space – from VIP hospitality suites and press rooms to player locker rooms and operational hubs – will be linked together by one centralised system.
This platform allows stadium staff to reconfigure any room instantly.
A luxury box can serve as a premium fan suite during a weekend match, morph into a high-tech corporate meeting room on Tuesday morning and host a community evening event on Thursday, all with a few taps on a control panel.
“Crestron’s arrival as Official Smart Hospitality Systems Partner is another important step in our ambition to make Espai Barça a global benchmark for innovation, connectivity and premium hospitality,” says Marc Bruix, Global Partnerships Director at FC Barcelona.
“Through this partnership, Spotify Camp Nou will become a smarter, more flexible and multifunctional venue, capable of delivering seamless and world-class experiences for fans, partners and visitors every single day of the year.”
Delivering seamless experiences
In stadiums, tech is often a patchwork of different systems that don’t talk to each other. By standardising the technology, a stadium ensures a smooth, reliable experience.
Brad Hintze, EVP of Global Customer Success and Marketing at Crestron, notes that this approach is the blueprint for the future of sports real estate:
“Espai Barça is about building what the modern venue should be. Going beyond the match days of each season, this new venue is primed to be active and lively all 365 days of the year.
Crestron is powering the infrastructure behind it by enabling every space to adapt instantly, operate seamlessly and deliver consistent experiences at massive scale.”
A new blueprint beyond sports
What’s happening in Barcelona is a masterclass in how physical venues need to evolve to survive.
By creating an adaptable environment, sports teams are transforming their physical assets into lively community destinations.
“Projects like Espai Barça represent the next chapter for large-scale venues and where the industry is heading,” Brad says.
“Organisations are no longer building spaces for a single purpose, but for continuous use that can power countless moments.
“Our role is to provide the infrastructure that makes those environments adaptable, scalable and simple to operate, no matter the size or complexity.”
